Chris DeMello AKA DJ Drifta
Chris started getting into Music at a very young age, when he used to view his Dad playing drums at gigs, from backstage. Inspired by this, Chris started to take drumming lessons at Bexley School of Music. It was plain to see that Music came naturally to him, and after just a few weeks he bought his first drum kit and played at his first concert.
As his love for music and instruments grew, he also learnt to play the Piano, inspired by the works of Stevie Wonder.
After playing on his cousins CD decks for a while, Chris was then bought a Numark dual CD deck for his 15th birthday. In a matter of hours, he picked up how to beat match, after a few days he managed to string a few tunes together, after a few weeks he was performing hour long sets to his family and friends. However, this was only mixing R&B and commercial chart music. His love for Drum & Bass came from watching his friend DJ Subtile spin D&B sets, whilst a few of his mates MCed over his tunes. This also prompted Chris to purchase his first set of turntables, Numark TT-100s.
After a while, Chris had an urge not only to spin other peoples beats, but to spin some of his own; from arranging his own tune on Music 2000 on the PSone, he moved through programs such as Fruity Loops, Reason, and his weapon of choice at the time, Cubase (he's now moved on to a Mac & Logic 7 alongside Reason 4 for drums).
After years of producing Drum & Bass, and many other genres, a couple of his tunes landed in the lap of a few DJ's, who then proceeded to hook him up with a regular radio show on ASR.
In 2005, at the age of 18, Chris went to his first rave, which he also happened to be DJing at. This was Desire, a Drum & Bass event held at The Scala, Kings Cross, London. In room 3 Chris played back-2-back with DJ Hardline, spinning a few of his own tracks, which hyped the crowd even more! In room one, many big Drum & Bass DJs were playing sets. Chris was blown away. These were the first Drum & Bass sets he had ever heard played on a massive sound system, but it was not to be the last!
Since then, under the alias of Drifta, Chris has been moving from strength to strength. His tracks have been played by many DJs, such as DJ Dice, Komatic, Specialist Sound, Nerm and Crissy Criss to name but a few! They have also been featured in many DJ mixes, such as the first ever Drum & Bass Arena unsigned podcast, and on many radio stations, such as Kool FM, Future Drumz, Leet Radio, Dance FM, Aftershock Radio, UK-Bass Radio, Level-1, Bassdrive, Radio Freedom, and of course Radio 1 and BBC Asian Network.
Chris, now an established artist in his own right also collaborates with artists from all over the globe, such as Drumlinezz (under the alias BroadKast), Chords (from Tane & Chords), Robot Redford, Static & Top Notch (from Spherical Sounds), Levelz, David Boomah (part of the Murderation collective) and many more!
The most successful collaboration Chris has been a part of is with his fellow DJ/Producer & musician, Mike Chung; they go under the alias Chaos Theory.
Chaos Theory have been extremely successful, also recieving radio play from Radio 1, and DJ'ing out at gigs all over the UK!
Chris has also done a fair few D&B, House, Electro, Dance, Bassline & Trance remixes (oh yes, he's a man of many talents ;) !) for other artists, such as Realign The Stars, Jaz and Panda.
Chris' love for music grows more every day. He is on course to be the DJ, producer and songwriter of tomorrow
